Orbital Gate
Positive Contact
Welcome to Orbital Gate! An interview talk show featuring cool artists and behind the scenes stories. Had this idea for a podcast kicking around for a while. Named after my favorite level from Star Fox: Assault, it’s a central hub for creative discussion.
Design Process
Designing the Orbital Station was a fun challenge. I wanted it to appear massive in scale, so achieving that level of detail took several iterations. “Breaking the box” and cutting up sections of geometry to form panel lines helped sell the size as well. The shape was inspired by both the Seattle Space Needle, and portable CD players from the early 2000s.
The final sequence was brought to life through the compositing process. I created multiple render passes for different elements like tiny windows lining the observation deck. Separate layers for the star map, planet and atmospheric gradients all added up to convey depth in the scene.
Put Your Headphones On
Our theme music was composed by the amazing Tempxa. I knew the podcast needed an energetic and optimistic opening sequence. And Tempxa was the perfect artist to bring that to life. Inspired by F-Zero TV and synthed up techno tracks of the era, it’s meant to invoke the very spirit of Y2K futurism.
A Very Special Episode…
Check out the first episode with special guest Farzad Varahramyan! Creative visual director, concept artist and co-creator of the video game Darkwatch. We got to talk about the origins and artwork of Darkwatch, the formation of High Moon Studios, and lasting connections and friendships formed over the years in the games industry.
